Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is nature bathing?
Nature Bathing is a way to connect and build a relationship with nature. This is done by a series of sensory explorations called invitations. To make the distinction from Shinrin-Yoku—which focuses on health driven outcomes—nature bathing is a focus on the relationship one has with nature. With time, slowness, and using our multiple senses, we cultivate a relationship and reap the health benefits of being out in nature.
What is Shinrin-Yoku?
Shinrin-Yoku (Shinrin=forest, Yoku= bath) is the Japanese practice of nature bathing that originated in the 1980s. Shinrin-Yoku was created in response to poor health outcomes caused by sedentary lifestyles and the advance of tech careers. The Japanese government sponsored research that had participants spend time in nature hiking and interacting with natural beings. Shinrin-Yoku is a more clinical, science driven form of nature bathing.

How long is a walk, in miles and time? Do I have to be able to hike far? Are we actually bathing?
Nature bathing isn’t about the length of walk, it is about the time spent outside. Most walks can be done within .25 to .50 miles. Walks can vary in time from 1.5 to 2 hours.
No strenuous hiking is required. Most walks are catered to participants of all skill levels on flat/semi-flat trails and surfaces.
There is no actual bathing, but some walks and trails can take place near water. The “bathing” in nature bathing is the act of allowing nature to wash over you.
What if I cannot go outside for a walk? How does a walk work in the winter?
Nature bathing can come to you! Nature bathing can be done in a wide variety of locations, including virtually and even indoors. In the winter and other forms of inclement weather, walks can be modified to take place indoors or under shelter. There are numerous possibilities to reap the benefits of nature bathing without being in a forest.
